Model trees without hiding the uncertainty

Use a solid crown as a deliberate approximation, then test how missing or uncertain obstacles change your result.

A green shape is not a leaf model

The tree consists of an opaque ellipsoidal crown and a trunk. Width and depth set its horizontal extent; total height also controls the simplified crown and trunk proportions. Every ray hitting those solids is blocked. There are no leaves, branch gaps, seasonal transparency, species or wind effects in the calculation.

Compare assumptions explicitly

Save one model with the crown included and another without it, or vary its measured extent. These are two hypothetical geometry scenarios, not guaranteed lower and upper bounds for a real tree: unmodelled objects can also block light. Label each exported result by its actual assumptions when you compare them.

Look beyond the nearest obstacle

An omitted building, wall or distant tree may cast a long shadow at low sun angles. The visible model does not automatically include all objects at the location. Walk around the observation point and note what rises above the relevant horizon. The level-ground model cannot reproduce a hillside or a mountain horizon.

Prefer measured dimensions to visual detail

A simple, well-placed block with a checked height can be more useful than many guessed shapes. Avoid false precision: entering a height to two decimals does not mean you measured it that accurately. Keep a record of uncertain inputs and test how small changes affect the result. A stable result across plausible dimensions is easier to interpret.

Use observations to decide what to fix

If the model and the site disagree, first check date, time zone, north, dimensions and missing obstacles. Clouds explain some missing real sunshine but do not validate the geometry. This tool helps organize a comparison; it does not certify a survey or predict how a tree or garden will develop.
